If the engine block is cast as a 427 there will be room to overbore it, w/o risk of running out of wall thickness. There just is not enough cylinder left but it is possible and many have been done. You would definitely need the 396 block sonic tested before you would know if it will work. Once it has been bored you end up with a block that can't be bored anymore. ….
